Liberia is known for the many wars it has experienced. Much infrastructure and buildings have been destroyed. There are still many rebels active in the country and that is why there is no tourism in the country. Liberia has an extensive flora and fauna. You will find sandy beaches where you can surf excellently, mountain areas, swamps and rainforests (44% of the country). Elephants, pygmy hippos, chimpanzees and antelopes live in these areas. The country is also known for its large rubber plantations. The population mostly lives from fishing. Fishing largely takes place on the country's 15 major rivers. These rivers are often shallow and have rapids in some places. Liberia is also known for its blood diamonds. Rebels have occupied diamond mines and pay for their weapons, among other things, with the diamonds.
